Is There an Unforgivable Sin?

Q: I have encountered many people who are held back from God because of sins they have committed. For example, I’ve met women who have had abortions and think that they cannot be accepted by God because of it. What would you say to people who feel like this?

A:  The most important thing I want you to understand is that God wants to forgive you.

Look at what the Bible says in Colossians 1:19-20: “For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,  and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”

Friend, it’s not us feeling guilty or being so religious that reconciles us to God. These verses say it clearly: It’s receiving the peace that was bought for us through the blood of the Cross!

The next verses go on, “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled  in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight ” (Colossians 1:21-22).

Now, it’s human for us to want to make ourselves worthy. We always want to be the ones to do the work and make ourselves acceptable to God, but I hope that these verses show you that that’s just not the way it happens. The only way your sin is forgiven is through the body of Jesus’ flesh through death.

Going back to your original question, you mentioned abortion, and some people may have had an abortion, and now they think, “This is a pretty bad sin. Are you sure there is forgiveness for my sin?” Of course there is! There is forgiveness for abortion just like there is forgiveness for lying, stealing, worrying — any sin we could ever commit!

You see, the Bible says if we sin in one area, we’re guilty of breaking the whole law (see James 2:10). For example, I haven’t ever killed anyone, but I have broken other parts of God’s law, so that means I am just as guilty as a murderer, and it’s the same blood of Jesus that forgives us both. 

I want you to understand, friend, in God’s eyes, my sin isn’t any better or worse than yours — the price He paid to forgive us is no different! And because of that blood, we are able to be presented to the Lord as holy and blameless.

Friend, no matter how bad you think your sin is, His blood has made you beyond reproach in His sight!
